Northern lights at Sky Lagoon

Some winter nights the aurora moves over the lagoon while you float at the edge. Most nights it does not. Here is how to stack the odds this season.

Sky Lagoon lists the northern lights among its winter views, and on a clear, active night you can watch them from the water. Nobody can promise one. You need darkness, a gap in the clouds and enough solar activity, all at once, and the lagoon closes at 21:00.

That closing time matters more than most articles admit. Below are the dark hours inside opening times for each month, the slot we would book, and where to check the forecast on the day.

The quick answer

Your realistic window is about 18:00 to 20:30, from November to January, when the sky is dark before the lagoon empties. Book the 18:00 or 18:30 slot, do the ritual early, and check the cloud map on vedur.is that afternoon. The Sun passed its maximum in 2024-25, but strong storms still come in the declining phase. A sighting is never guaranteed.

Can you see the northern lights from Sky Lagoon?

Yes, on clear nights with enough activity, from the water itself. Treat it as a bonus: the lagoon is lit, and it sits inside the capital area.

The lagoon looks out over the sea from the tip of Kársnes in Kópavogur, 13 minutes from central Reykjavík. That is the appeal and the catch. The pool lighting and the city glow wash out a faint aurora. A strong one is plain to the eye; a weak one often shows up better on a phone camera than in person.

Phones and small cameras are allowed in the lagoon, never in the changing rooms or showers, and smart glasses are banned (Sky Lagoon FAQ). Bring a waterproof pouch. And keep expectations honest. One November guest stayed past sunset: "We stayed until the stats came out. Not lucky enough to see northern lights on our visit." They still gave it five stars.

When is it dark enough at Sky Lagoon to see the aurora?

From about 19:30 in late October, 18:30 in mid November and 18:00 around the solstice, until the lagoon empties at 20:30. From late February the sky is still too light at closing.

Iceland's aurora season runs from roughly September to April, but Sky Lagoon's version is shorter, because you have to be in the water before 20:30. We took sunset and twilight times for Reykjavík from timeanddate. "Dark enough" is the end of nautical twilight, when the sky is dark enough for most displays; a strong aurora can show up earlier.

December and January give you the longest stretch, two hours or more. On 26 December and 1 January the lagoon stays open until 22:00, an extra hour of dark water. Christmas Eve is no good: the lagoon is empty by 17:30. Full details are in our winter hours post.

What time slot should you book for the northern lights at Sky Lagoon?

18:00 or 18:30, the last two slots. Do the ritual first and be back in the lagoon by about 19:30 for an hour of darkness.

The ritual closes at 20:00, so do it straight away: a quick dip, then cold plunge, sauna, mist, scrub, steam and the crowberry elixir, and back out into the dark. Our ritual guide walks through the steps. Every slot costs the same, so the late one is no premium.

Think about the ride home. The last Reykjavík Excursions bus leaves the lagoon at 20:30, the same moment the lagoon empties, so the ticket with the return bus only works if you get out by about 20:00. A taxi or a private driver lets you stay until the end. The private return transfer is transfer only, with no lagoon ticket, so book your entry separately if you take it.

A private driver from your hotel plus the ticket, with a return time you choose, so you can stay until the lagoon empties.

How do you check the aurora forecast for Reykjavík?

Use the Icelandic Met Office's aurora page on vedur.is: a cloud map of Iceland plus an activity index from 0 to 9, up to six days ahead. Clouds decide more nights than the index.

On the vedur.is aurora forecast green areas are cloudy and white areas are clear, and the box in the corner shows the activity level for the time you pick. The page also gives sunset, darkness and moonrise times for Reykjavík. Look for white over the capital area at 18:00 to 21:00. Check the morning of your visit and again mid-afternoon, since coastal cloud moves fast.

The Moon matters too, especially with lit water around you. New moons this winter fall on 9 November, 9 December, 7 January and 6 February; full moons on 24 November, 24 December, 22 January and 20 February (timeanddate moon phases). Free cancellation ends 24 hours before your slot, so you cannot wait for the forecast. Book an evening slot early in your trip, and keep a later night for a dedicated aurora tour if the clouds win.

Is 2026-27 still a good winter for the northern lights?

Yes. NASA and NOAA declared the solar maximum in October 2024, and the Met Office says the declining phase can still bring strong storms. Expect fewer big nights than in 2024-25, not none.

On 15 October 2024 NASA, NOAA and the Solar Cycle Prediction Panel announced that "the Sun is officially in solar maximum of Solar Cycle 25". In January 2026 the UK Met Office wrote that solar maximum is "all-but-confirmed to have taken place in 2024 and 2025", and that the declining phase "can be a period which can often bring strong events".

Iceland sits close to the auroral oval, so even a modest night can reach Reykjavík's sky. The real limits at Sky Lagoon are local: cloud, city light and a 21:00 closing time. A busy Sun does not fix any of those, and a quieter one does not end your chances.

Should you book a northern lights tour instead?

If seeing the aurora is the goal, yes: a tour drives away from the city lights to wherever the clouds break. Sky Lagoon is the warm way to try your luck on a night you are in town anyway.

A lagoon visit and an aurora hunt fit on the same day. Take an afternoon slot, have dinner, then join an evening tour, as one guest did: "We had to cut it shorter than we wanted since we had our Northern Lights tour right after." For a full day out, the Golden Circle day with Sky Lagoon ends with the soak after Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss and Kerið, and in midwinter that soak comes after sunset.

Or keep it simple: book the evening slot, look up between the sauna and the steam room, and count anything green as a gift.
