Saman or Sér?

The water, the sauna, the scrub and the elixir are identical on both passes. You are choosing where you undress, and how much that is worth to you.

Sky Lagoon sells two passes. Saman is the classic, most popular one. Sér is the premium one. Both include the lagoon, the cold plunge and the full seven-step ritual, and both let you stay until closing.

The difference is the changing room, and the details matter more than the names suggest. Here is what each side really looks like, what Sér costs on top, and who should pay it.

The quick answer

Sér gives you a private changing room with its own shower, Sky Body Lotion, a private vanity and a waterproof bag to keep. Saman has a shared changing area with individual shower cubicles. Sér costs ISK 3,000 more per adult (about $26). Pay it if you are shy about changing in front of others, travelling as a couple who want to change together, or bringing a teenager.

What is the difference between Saman and Sér at Sky Lagoon?

Only the changing room. Sér has private changing rooms and showers with body lotion; Saman has a shared changing area with shower cubicles.

Once you walk out of the changing room, nobody can tell who paid what. Saman and Sér guests use the same lagoon, the same bar and the same turf house.

Is the Sér pass worth the extra money?

For most couples and anyone uneasy about shared changing rooms, yes. If you are relaxed about it, Saman gives you exactly the same lagoon for ISK 3,000 less.

The extra is ISK 3,000 per adult on any day, about $26 at the official site's own rate.

Reviewers who paid for Sér rarely regret it. One wrote in October 2026: "I would recommend the private changing room which has private showers, towels, shampoo/conditioner, body lotion and a hair dryer." Another put the reason plainly: "it adds to the experience not to have to strip naked to shower with a bunch of strangers." Our view: if that sentence made you wince, buy Sér and stop thinking about it.

Do you have to shower naked at Sky Lagoon?

Yes, on both passes. The Icelandic pool rule is that you shower without a swimsuit before entering; Saman gives you a cubicle to do it in, Sér a private room.

This is the question behind most Sér upgrades. Sky Lagoon's FAQ says showering without a swimsuit is required, as in every Icelandic pool. On Saman you use the shared changing area, then a shower cubicle. That is more private than the open showers of a typical Reykjavík swimming pool. A September 2026 guest who chose Saman wrote that "we had showers stalls that allowed for private showering."

Where Saman stays shared is the undressing itself, and the vanity. If that bothers you, Sér removes it entirely. More on the rules in what to bring to Sky Lagoon.

Can couples share a Sér changing room?

Guests report they could. Several couples write that they used one private Sér room together, which the shared Saman areas don't offer.

One reviewer wrote that they "used the sky pass and were able to use the private changing rooms as a couple". Another, who upgraded at the desk, said "you can stay with your partner in the sky package". Sky Lagoon also opens its private changing rooms to anyone who prefers a gender-neutral space: ask at check-in.

For a couple on a special trip, Sér plus the Date Night package is the full version: two Sér passes, a drink each and the Sky Platter.

Which Sky Lagoon pass is best for families with teenagers?

Sér. Sky Lagoon itself recommends the Sér changing rooms for families, for the space and the privacy.

The minimum age is 12, with no exceptions: Sky Lagoon counts a child who turns 12 this year. Ages 12 to 14 need a guardian aged 18 or over for the whole visit, and staff may ask for a passport or ID. Youth passes cost half the adult price: ISK 7,495 for Saman, ISK 8,995 for Sér.

Sér lets a parent and a teenager change together in one room, with no shared area to negotiate. For under-12s there is no pass at all; the Blue Lagoon admits children from age 2.

Bringing a teenager? Choose Sér at checkout and change together in a private room.

What happened to the Pure and Sky passes?

They were renamed. Pure is now Saman and Sky is now Sér. Pure Lite, a lagoon-only pass without the ritual, no longer exists.

Older blogs, resale listings and even some tour pages still use the old names. Marina Travel's listing, for one, sells "Saman Pass (former Pure Pass) and Sér Pass (former Sky Pass)". The Silfra and Sky Lagoon combo still calls its ticket a Pure pass; read that as Saman.

Pure Lite is the one to watch for. It was cheaper because it left out the ritual. It is gone, and every pass sold today includes the seven steps. The Viator ticket's web address still contains Pure-Lite, but what you buy is Saman or Sér with the ritual, as its inclusions list.

Can you upgrade from Saman to Sér at Sky Lagoon?

Guests report upgrading at reception on arrival. It depends on Sér changing rooms being free, so book Sér ahead if you are sure.

A February 2023 reviewer wrote: "We opted to upgrade when we arrived to private changing, the area was lovely." On a busy weekend afternoon the private rooms can be full, and then there is nothing to upgrade to. If privacy is a deal breaker, choose Sér when you book.

Which pass do the multi-passes and packages use?

Both. Every package comes in a Saman and a Sér version, and the six-visit multi-pass is sold as Venja (Saman) or Hefð (Sér).

The gap stays roughly the same everywhere: Date Night costs $173.20 per person with Saman and $195.73 with Sér. The multi-pass costs $389.63 for six Saman visits and $467.61 for six Sér visits. Full prices are in Sky Lagoon tickets and prices.
